A Bassist's Tale ~ 28th June 2012

Why did you do the project in the first place?

I was at the drummer's place, and he asked me if I wanted to play on this cool dude's album. No one EVER asks me to play on their stuff, so I felt honoured to be asked.

What was it you liked about it all?

I liked the record button being pushed, and the 'check out what I can f***ing do' feeling that comes shortly afterwards.:)

What was the least enjoyable experience of the project?

I enjoyed every second of it. Although the waiting to hear to finished product bit is kind of sucking! Rob did, however, at one point ask me to detune the bass to play in a lower key, and it was so low the strings were almost hanging off the fretboard - felt like playing on a &^*%ing washing line! Funny, though...!

What was the most enjoyable experience of the project?

I liked playing the four string Warwick bass that was in the studio. My six string was dying, so I couldn't use it on the album. Ooh, and I liked coming up with cool bass lines, and getting to play in silly time signatures. :)

What was  - for you - the funniest moment?

I liked when Michael Winslow was having a shave and he was making it sound like an electric shaver......no wait, that was a scene from Police Academy...

How much (or not!) did you enjoy the project?

I enjoyed it immensely, so much so that if I were to purchase a cat, I would name it Rob.....or Balthazar...

Which is your favourite track - and why?

Drowning Man! I don't normally play with a pick, and one of the sound dudes gave me this cactus pick, and I started to play this Jaco Pastorius styley riff with it, just taking the p*ss, and it sounded really cool. Ooh, and the track, Only Time Will Tell, with my bass solo in the middle ferdiddle. There wasn't originally meant to be a bass solo in there, but when I was learning the song from the demo Rob sent me there was a big empty sounding section, and Rob kindly let me whack off during that bit.

Anything else you can think of?!!

Rob is a good driver, and if he wants to swap his Merc for my Focus I will let him, because I'm nice like that.

Finally - would you do it again?!!

Yes!!
